| Abstract |
Background. The absence of unambiguous interpretation of concepts “compe-tence” and “competency” can lead to the incorrect statement of foreign language teaching purposes. In our opinion this problem can be solved by relating the mea-ning of the above-mentioned concepts with the concept of “erudition”. The paper aims to reveal the character of the relationship between the concepts “competence”, “competency”, “erudition” to define the concept of “socio-cultural erudition”.
Materials and methods. The authors studied scientific works related to peda-gogy, teaching methods issues, and vocabulary entries.
Results. The authors revealed the special character of the relationship between the concepts “competence”, “competency”, “erudition”. They also presented this re-lationship graphically. The concept “sociocultural erudition” is opened.
Conclusions. Competence is the complex concept including several elements in the structure namely: erudition and competency. Erudition (a cognitive and motiva-tional component) is such component of competence which indicates knowledge and an outlook of the person in a certain sphere. Competency (an activity component) allows to resolve a circle of certain issues. Both elements of competence contribute to the functioning of each other.
